What this JEE Main percentile calculator does
In JEE Main, your headline number is not your raw marks out of 300 -- it is your NTA percentile score, a normalised figure between 0 and 100 that positions you against everyone who sat your specific session (shift). This calculator applies the exact percentile formula the National Testing Agency publishes, then translates the result into an estimated All India Rank (AIR) so you can gauge roughly where you stand.
Because the percentile depends on how the whole session performed, raw marks on their own cannot produce it. Enter two counts from your session -- how many candidates scored at or below you, and how many appeared in total -- and the percentile is computed to the same 7 decimal places NTA uses. The raw-score field is there purely for your own reference and never enters the formula.
The NTA percentile formula
The per-session percentile score is:
Percentile P = 100 × (C≤ / N)
- C≤ -- candidates in your session whose raw score is equal to or less than yours (this is inclusive of you, which is why the session topper maps to exactly 100).
- N -- the total number of candidates who appeared in that same session.
The estimated All India Rank is then derived from the percentile:
Estimated AIR ≈ (100 − P) × N / 100
Worked example
Suppose 22,000 candidates sat your session and 20,900 of them scored at or below your raw score of 260/300. The engine below runs the identical computation the calculator uses:

The ratio 20,900 / 22,000 = 0.95, so the percentile is 95.0000000. This mirrors the kind of worked example published by exam-guidance references and reproduces the NTA method to full precision.
Percentile vs estimated rank at a glance
A high percentile still translates into a large numerical rank when lakhs of candidates appear. Assumptions and limitations
- Single-session computation. This applies NTA’s per-shift formula. NTA’s full procedure additionally equates the four (or eight) shifts of a session via equi-percentile normalisation, so a single-shift value can differ slightly from the figure NTA ultimately publishes.
- Marks alone are not enough. A genuine marks-to-percentile mapping needs your shift’s full score distribution, which is not public before results. Any raw “marks vs percentile” table elsewhere is a year- and shift-specific approximation, which is why this tool asks for candidate counts instead.
- The AIR figure is an estimate. The real All India Rank uses merged, normalised scores across all sessions plus official tie-breaking rules (age, subject-wise marks, and so on) that a simple linear estimate cannot model.
- Rank scales with the total. The appeared count N varies each year (roughly 12-14 lakh), so the rank estimate is only as accurate as the total-candidates figure you supply.
- Not an official NTA tool. This is an independent estimator. Your authoritative percentile and rank are whatever NTA publishes on your scorecard.

What is the NTA percentile score in JEE Main?+
The NTA percentile score shows what percentage of candidates in your specific JEE Main session (shift) scored at or below your raw score. It is not the same as your raw marks out of 300 -- a percentile of 95 means you scored higher than roughly 95% of everyone who sat that exact shift.
How is JEE Main percentile calculated from raw marks?+
It isn't calculated directly from raw marks. NTA's official formula is Percentile = 100 x (candidates in your session who scored equal to or less than you / total candidates in that session), computed to 7 decimal places. Your raw marks alone can't produce this number -- you need the session's candidate-count data.
Can I convert my JEE Main marks directly into a percentile?+
Not exactly. A marks-to-percentile conversion needs the full score distribution of your specific shift, which NTA does not publish before results. Marks-vs-percentile tables you see online are built from previous years’ data and are only rough, year-specific approximations -- this calculator instead uses the exact NTA formula once you supply your session’s candidate counts.
What is the difference between JEE Main percentile and All India Rank (AIR)?+
Percentile is a normalised 0-100 score comparing you only to candidates in your own shift, used to put every shift on a common scale. AIR is your position across all candidates nationwide, calculated later by NTA after merging normalised scores from every shift and applying tie-breaking rules. This calculator's AIR figure is only an estimate derived from your percentile and total appeared candidates.
How does this calculator estimate my JEE Main percentile?+

Why does JEE Main need percentile normalisation across shifts?+
JEE Main is held over several sessions and shifts, and question difficulty can vary slightly between them. Comparing raw marks directly would unfairly penalise candidates who got a harder shift. Percentile normalisation compares each candidate only to others in their own shift, then puts every shift on the same 0-100 scale.
What percentile is typically needed for a good JEE Main rank?+
This varies every year with the total number of candidates and the paper's difficulty, so there's no fixed number. As a rough sense of scale, roughly 12-14 lakh candidates appear each year, so even a 95th percentile can correspond to a rank in the tens of thousands -- use the estimated AIR figure above with your own percentile and total-appeared count for a session-specific estimate.
How accurate is the percentile-to-rank (AIR) estimate on this page?+
It's a reasonable approximation, not an official figure. The estimate assumes rank scales linearly with (100 - percentile) x total candidates. The real AIR that NTA publishes uses scores merged and equated across all sessions plus official tie-breaking rules (such as age or subject-wise marks), which this simple estimate does not model.
Does my JEE Main percentile change if the total number of candidates changes?+
Yes -- percentile is always relative to your own session. If you re-enter a different total-candidates figure (for example, correcting an earlier estimate), both the percentile and the estimated AIR recalculate immediately based on the new numbers.
What if I don't know my session's candidate counts?+
You need the count of candidates who scored at or below you and the total who appeared in your specific session/shift -- these typically appear on or after your official NTA scorecard or result release. Without them, an exact percentile cannot be derived from raw marks alone; you can still use the raw-score field above purely for your own reference.

NTA calculates percentile scores to 7 decimal places specifically to reduce ties among candidates with very close raw scores -- for example, 94.1234567 rather than a rounded 94.12. This calculator reproduces that same precision.
How many marks are needed for 99 percentile in JEE Main?+
There isn't a fixed number, and NTA doesn't publish one. The marks needed for 99th percentile shift every year with the total candidates in a session and how difficult that session's paper turns out to be, so the same raw score can land in different percentile bands across sessions or years. Any "marks needed for 99 percentile" figure circulating online is a rough estimate drawn from a previous year's results, not something NTA guarantees will repeat. If you know your own session's candidate counts, use the calculator above for your actual percentile instead of guessing from marks.
Are marks-to-percentile tables and rank predictors reliable?+
Only as a rough guide. A marks-to-percentile table is built by looking at a previous year's results and assuming this year's candidate pool and paper difficulty will behave the same way -- an assumption that often breaks down, since both shift every session. These tables can give you a ballpark before results are declared, but they can't reproduce NTA's actual formula, which needs your specific session's candidate-count data rather than a historical average. That's why this calculator computes percentile from the real formula once you supply those counts, instead of offering a lookup table.
