What the Study Hours Planner does

When an exam is looming, the anxious question is rarely “how much work is there?” — it’s “is there enough time to do it?” The Study Hours Planner answers exactly that. You tell it how many days remain, how many of those are genuine rest days, how many subjects you’re preparing and how many hours each one still needs, plus the most you can realistically study in a single day. It returns the average hours per day you must put in, the hours per subject per day, and a plain verdict on whether the plan fits the capacity you set.

It is a forward-planning tool: you start from a workload and a deadline and work out the daily rate required — the opposite direction to an attendance calculator, which works backward from a target percentage using classes already held.

How it works

The math is deliberately simple and transparent — no hidden ratios, no silently assumed “study factor”:

usable study days = max(days until exam − rest days, 0)
total study hours = number of subjects × hours needed per subject
required hours per day = total study hours ÷ usable study days
hours per subject per day = hours needed per subject ÷ usable study days
feasible = usable study days > 0 and required hours per day ≤ your max hours per day

Every division is guarded: if you have no usable study days (all remaining days are rest days), no required daily rate can be worked out, so the calculator shows a dash and flags the plan infeasible rather than inventing a number. That’s a deliberate modelling choice — a made-up figure would be worse than an honest “there’s no time left to divide.”

The single lever with the most leverage is usually usable study days, because it divides the entire workload. Trimming one rest day often lowers your required daily hours more than shaving an hour off a subject does.

How many hours does a subject actually need?

The calculator never guesses this for you — you enter it — but a well-known benchmark helps you estimate. Under the US federal credit-hour definition, one credit hour corresponds to roughly one hour of instruction plus at least two hours of independent study per week over an approximately 15-week term (closer to three for lab-heavy or STEM courses). Scale that down for a focused revision window rather than a whole semester.

When a plan comes back infeasible

Infeasible simply means the required daily hours exceed the ceiling you set. You have four levers, and the calculator recalculates the moment you nudge any of them:

If you cannot honestly move any lever, that is itself useful information: the plan needs a change of scope, not a change of arithmetic. Pair this with a final grade calculator to decide which subjects deserve the scarce hours based on how much each exam actually moves your result.

Common mistakes when planning study hours

  • Treating rest days as a rounding error. A handful of unplanned off-days late in the window can push the required daily hours up sharply — enter your rest days honestly up front rather than discovering the shortfall a week before the exam.
  • Banking hours to cram at the end. Spreading the same total hours across every usable day is generally more effective for retention than saving them for one long session — see the FAQ above on spacing versus cramming.
  • Guessing hoursPerSubject instead of estimating it from the syllabus. A number pulled out of thin air makes every other output unreliable; skim the syllabus or past papers for each subject and estimate from there (the credit-hour benchmark above is a starting point, not a rule).
  • Setting maxHoursPerDay to an aspirational number. Entering the most you could theoretically study, rather than what you can actually sustain day after day, makes a plan look feasible on paper while being unrealistic in practice.
  • Re-reading instead of self-testing. The planner tells you how many hours to spend on each subject, not how to spend them — active recall (practice questions, flashcards) is generally more effective per hour than passively re-reading notes.

Assumptions and limitations

  • The workload is spread evenly across every usable study day — there is no day-to-day weighting for difficulty, urgency or which subject is examined first.
  • Every subject is assumed to need the same hours. If your subjects vary a lot, run the planner once per subject or enter a weighted-average hours-per-subject figure.
  • Rest days are treated as zero-study days and subtracted before the division; the planner does not schedule which days those are.
  • Feasibility is a linear capacity check against the maximum daily hours you enter. It does not model burnout, sleep, spaced repetition or the diminishing returns of very long sessions — a plan that “fits” on paper is not automatically the most effective one.
  • It is a flat-average planner, not a timetable: it tells you the daily rate, not the sequence. Use the per-subject daily hours as targets and decide your own rotation.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate how many hours I need to study per day before an exam?+

Subtract any rest days from the days you have left to get your usable study days, then divide your total remaining study hours (subjects x hours needed per subject) by that number. For example, 4 subjects needing 12 hours each is 48 hours; spread over 30 usable days that is 48 / 30 = 1.6 hours a day.

How many hours should I study per subject per day?+

Divide the hours you still need for that one subject by your usable study days. If a subject needs 12 hours and you have 30 usable days, that subject alone needs 12 / 30 = 0.4 hours (about 24 minutes) a day on average — the calculator does this for every subject at once.

What counts as a 'rest day' in this planner?+

Any day where you plan to do zero study — weekends off, holidays, travel days, or the exam days themselves. Rest days are subtracted from your total available days before the workload is divided, so the remaining hours are spread only across the days you'll actually study.

How do I know how many hours I need per subject?+

There's no single universal number — it depends on your syllabus, how well you already know the material and your target grade. A commonly cited university benchmark is roughly 2 hours of independent study per credit-hour per week (about 3 for lab or STEM courses) over a 15-week term, which you can scale down for exam revision; enter your own honest estimate in 'hours needed per subject'.

What does 'feasible' mean in the results?+

Feasible means the hours per day required to finish all your subjects fit within the maximum daily study capacity you entered. If it shows infeasible, either your available days are too few, your rest days too many, your subject workload too high, or your daily capacity limit too low relative to the plan.

What should I do if my plan comes back infeasible?+

You have four levers: reduce rest days, extend the number of days until the exam, lower the hours you need per subject (by cutting scope or prioritising), or realistically raise your maximum hours per day. Adjust one and recheck — the calculator recalculates instantly as you change any input.

Does this planner tell me which subject to study on which day?+

No — it gives you the average daily hours needed overall and per subject, not a day-by-day timetable. Use the per-subject daily hours as a target and decide your own sequencing (e.g. rotating subjects, or front-loading your weakest one).

Why can't it work out my daily study hours when rest days equal my available days?+

If every remaining day is a rest day, there are zero usable study days left, so there is nothing to divide the workload across — no daily figure can be worked out, and the calculator flags the plan as infeasible instead of showing a meaningless number.

Can I use this for something other than exam prep, like certification study or a course deadline?+

Yes. The math only needs a deadline (available days), rest days, a workload split into 'subjects' (or topics, modules, chapters — anything countable), hours needed for each, and your daily capacity. It works equally well for professional certifications, board exams or coursework deadlines.

Is more study hours per day always better?+

Not necessarily — this calculator checks whether a plan fits your stated capacity, but it doesn't model fatigue, retention or diminishing returns from very long daily sessions. Treat the 'feasible' result as a capacity check, not a guarantee that cramming the maximum hours will produce the best learning outcome.

How is this different from a simple attendance or percentage tracker?+

An attendance tracker works backward from a percentage target using classes already held; this planner works forward from a workload (subjects x hours needed) and a deadline to tell you the daily study rate required and whether it's realistic given your capacity — a different question entirely.

Can I plan for subjects that need very different amounts of time?+

This calculator assumes every subject needs the same number of hours (hours needed per subject x number of subjects). If your subjects vary a lot, either run the calculator once per subject with its own hours and days, or enter an average hours-per-subject figure that reflects your overall workload.

Is it better to study every day in short sessions or cram everything into one long session?+

Spreading your remaining hours across every usable day is generally considered better for retention than saving them all for one long session right before the exam — reviewing material more than once, with gaps in between, tends to help it stick longer than working through it once. Does testing myself help more than re-reading my notes?+

Actively recalling information — through practice questions, flashcards, or explaining a topic from memory without looking — is generally considered more effective for retention than passively re-reading notes or highlighting a textbook. The calculator only tells you how many hours to spend on each subject, not how to spend them; building some of that time around self-testing rather than pure re-reading is a free way to get more out of the same hours.
