What is the NEET AIR to State Rank Calculator?
After NTA declares NEET-UG results, every candidate receives one number that ranks them against the entire country: their All India Rank (AIR). But 85% of government medical seats are filled through state quota counselling, where what matters is your position inside your own state’s merit list — a figure NTA never publishes. This calculator bridges that gap with a transparent statistical estimate: it converts your AIR into an approximate state rank using your state’s share of the national candidate pool.
It is a planning aid, not an official conversion. Real state merit lists are compiled independently by each state’s counselling authority directly from NEET scores, filtered by domicile eligibility, category and tie-break rules. Use this to set rough expectations before counselling — then confirm against your state authority’s actual list.
How it works
The estimate rests on one simple idea: if candidates from your state were spread evenly across the national AIR ordering, then your rank within your state would be your AIR scaled down by your state’s share of all candidates.

The result is floored at 1 (a merit rank can never be zero) and capped at min(AIR, C_state) — your state rank can never be numerically worse than your AIR, because your state pool is always a subset of the national pool.

Take an AIR of 10,000 with 2,42,058 state candidates out of 22,09,318 nationally (NEET-UG 2025 “appeared” figures). Every value below is produced by the same engine that powers the calculator above.

The same AIR gives a different state rank in every state
Because the estimate scales with your state’s share, an identical AIR of 25,000 converts to a very different state rank depending on how many candidates your state fields. The table below holds the AIR and national total fixed and varies only the state pool size.

Larger, coaching-dense states fill their merit lists faster, so a rank that looks comfortable nationally can be mid-pack in a big state. This is exactly why a state-level view matters alongside your AIR.
AIQ vs State Quota — where a state rank even applies
NEET counselling runs on two parallel tracks. The 15% All India Quota (AIQ) is conducted by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) purely on your AIR — no state rank is involved. The 85% State Quota is run by each state’s own authority from a separate state merit list, and that is the only place a state rank exists. This calculator estimates your position in that state-quota pool.

Assumptions and limitations
Keep these in mind before you act on the estimate:
- Uniform distribution is a heuristic. Candidates from a state are assumed to be spread evenly across the national ranking. In reality coaching-dense states cluster toward the top, so real state ranks skew away from this straight line — most at very low or very high AIR.
- General/open category only. Category-wise (SC/ST/OBC/EWS/PwD) state ranks use separate, smaller merit pools and are not modelled here.
- Domicile, not exam centre. The relevant state is the one whose eligibility rules qualify you for its state quota — which can differ from where you sat the exam.
- Same basis for both counts. Mixing “appeared” state numbers with “registered” national numbers biases the ratio.
- No seat guarantee. Actual allotment depends on cutoffs, seat matrix, reservation, counselling round and choices filled — none of which this tool models.
- Refresh the defaults each year. The pre-filled counts are NEET-UG 2025 figures; override both for a different exam year.

Frequently asked questions
Is there an official NTA formula to convert AIR to a state rank?+
No. NTA publishes only the All India Rank (AIR). Each state's counselling authority (e.g. KEA in Karnataka, DGME in Tamil Nadu) independently builds its own state merit list directly from NEET scores, filtered by domicile eligibility, category and state-specific tie-break rules. This calculator's estimate is a statistical approximation, not an official conversion.
How does this calculator estimate my NEET state rank from my AIR?+
It assumes candidates from your state are spread roughly evenly across the national AIR ordering, so your estimated state rank is your AIR multiplied by your state's share of the national candidate pool (state candidates ÷ total candidates).
How accurate is the estimated NEET state rank?+
It is a rough guide, not a guarantee. States with a dense coaching ecosystem tend to cluster more candidates near the top of the national ranking than the uniform-distribution assumption predicts, so your real state rank can differ from the estimate — sometimes by a noticeable margin, especially at very low or very high AIR.
Should I use my domicile state or the state where I took the exam?+
Use your domicile (eligibility) state — the state whose residency/education rules qualify you for its state quota merit list — not necessarily the state of your exam centre. These can differ if you appeared for NEET in a different state than the one you're eligible for state quota admission in.
Should I enter 'appeared' or 'registered' candidate counts?+
Use 'appeared' counts for both your state and the national total — that is the recommended and pre-filled basis. Mixing bases (e.g. state 'appeared' against national 'registered') will silently skew the ratio and the estimate.
What is the difference between All India Quota (AIQ) and State Quota in NEET counselling?+
15% of seats in government medical colleges are filled through the All India Quota (AIQ), counselled by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) directly using your AIR — no state rank is involved there. The remaining 85% State Quota seats are filled by each state's own counselling authority using a separate state merit list, which is what this calculator estimates.
Does this calculator account for reservation or category-wise rank?+
No. It estimates only the General/open-category state rank. Category-wise (SC/ST/OBC/EWS/PwD) state ranks are computed on separate, smaller merit pools with their own reservation rules and are not modelled by this calculator.
Where can I find my state's NEET candidate count?+
NTA publishes state-wise appeared/registered/qualified candidate counts alongside the official NEET-UG result statistics each year. Use the count for your domicile state and the same basis (appeared/registered) as your national total.
Can I use this calculator for a NEET year other than 2025?+
Yes — override the default state and national candidate counts with the figures published for your exam year before calculating. The default values shown are NEET-UG 2025 figures and will not be accurate for a different year unless you update them.
Why did my calculated estimated state rank come out equal to my AIR or close to it?+
That happens when your state's share of the national candidate pool is large relative to the total, or when you've entered inconsistent counts (e.g. accidentally swapped state and total candidates). The calculator floors and caps the result so it never shows an impossible rank worse than your AIR.
Can my estimated state rank be worse (a larger number) than my All India Rank?+
No — a state rank can never be numerically worse than the AIR, since the state pool is always a subset of the national pool. If your inputs would otherwise imply that, the calculator clamps the estimate so it never exceeds your AIR.
Does a good estimated state rank guarantee me a medical seat in my state quota?+
No. This is only an approximation of your position within your state's merit pool. Actual seat allotment also depends on the year's cutoffs, number of seats, reservation category, counselling round, and choices filled — none of which this calculator models.
I only have my NEET score or percentile, not my AIR — can I still use this calculator?+
Not directly — this tool needs your All India Rank as the starting point, not your raw marks or percentile. Your official AIR is printed on the NTA scorecard released with your NEET-UG result; look it up there first, then come back and enter it here along with your state and national candidate counts.
