NEET attempt strategy under negative marking
The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET UG), conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA), is a single 180-minute paper of 180 compulsory questions — 45 each in Physics and Chemistry, and 90 in Biology — worth a maximum of 720 marks. Every correct answer earns +4, every wrong answer costs −1, and anything left blank scores 0. That penalty is what makes "how many should I attempt?" a real strategic question rather than "attempt everything".

The 180-question paper, subject by subject
The break-even math on this page applies uniformly across the paper, but the 180 questions themselves aren't evenly split — Biology alone carries half the total marks:

Because Biology is worth as much as Physics and Chemistry combined, the same accuracy swing costs or gains twice as many marks there. A candidate deciding where to spend extra guessing time on exam day gets more expected value from tightening Biology accuracy than an equivalent effort in either of the other two subjects.
How the expected score is worked out
The +4/−1 scheme turns each block of attempts into an expected number of correct and wrong answers, then into marks:
Raw score = (4 × total correct) − (1 × total wrong) · Unattempted × 0 = 0
- Confident block: correct = attempts × accuracy%, wrong = attempts − correct.
- Guess block: correct = guesses × guess-success%, wrong = guesses − correct.
- The two counts are added, then the combined attempts are capped at the 180-question paper.
A neat closed form falls out of this: for A attempted questions at accuracy p, the expected raw score is A × (5p − 1). That single expression is why the break-even lands at exactly 20% — set 5p − 1 = 0 and p = 0.2. Worked example
Take a candidate who answers 160 questions confidently at 85% accuracy and skips the remaining 20. The table below is generated live by the same engine the calculator uses.

Their expected raw score is 520 out of 720 — 136 correct earning 544 marks, minus 24 wrong costing 24 marks. The 20 blanks neither helped nor hurt. Pushing accuracy up, or converting a few skips into above-break-even guesses, is what moves this number.
Why 20% is the line that matters
Because a wrong answer costs a mark, attempting a question is only worth it when your chance of getting it right clears the break-even. The table below fixes a full 180-question attempt and varies only the accuracy, so you can see the raw score cross zero exactly at 20%:

Notice how steep the swing is near the bottom: moving from 10% to 20% accuracy adds 180 marks, while the same 10-point jump from 80% to 90% adds a smaller amount relative to where you already are. Assumptions and limitations
- Uses the NEET UG 2025-onward pattern: 180 compulsory questions, no optional Section B, single 180-minute shift, +4/−1/0 marking. The marking scheme and question count are set by NTA each cycle and are time-sensitive — re-check them against the current NTA information bulletin.
- The expected score is a statistical estimate. It treats your accuracy and guess-success as applying uniformly across the relevant questions; your real exam-day result depends on which specific questions you get right or wrong.
- Guessed questions are modeled as attempts additional to your confident set, with the combined total capped at 180. If your two inputs add up to more than 180, the total is capped and unattempted floors at 0 — the tool does not otherwise check that the two figures describe one consistent paper.
- This tool models raw marks only. It does not convert your score into All India Rank, percentile or college cut-offs — none of those has a fixed formula, and all vary every year with paper difficulty and the candidate pool. NTA's rule of awarding +4 for a dropped or multiple-correct question is also not modeled.
- "Attempt strategy" here means how many questions to answer or guess during the exam — not how many times you sit NEET. Eligibility rules such as attempt caps or age limits are a separate matter and out of scope.

How many questions should I attempt in NEET to maximize my score?+
There's no single 'right' number - it depends entirely on your accuracy. Because each correct answer is worth 4 marks and each wrong one costs 1 mark, attempting more questions raises your expected score as long as your accuracy on those extra questions stays above 20%. Below 20% accuracy, attempting more actually lowers your expected score.
What is the break-even accuracy for guessing in NEET?+
20%. It comes directly from the marking scheme: penalty / (award + penalty) = 1 / (4 + 1) = 0.20. At exactly 20% accuracy, attempting a question is expected to add zero marks on average; above 20% it adds marks, below 20% it subtracts them.
Should I guess if I can eliminate one or two wrong options?+
Usually yes. A blind guess among 4 options already has a 25% chance of being correct - above the 20% break-even. Eliminating even one wrong option raises your odds to roughly 33% (1 in 3), which pushes the expected value further into positive territory.
How is my expected NEET score calculated?+
Split your paper into confident attempts and guesses. For confident attempts: correct = attempts x accuracy%, wrong = attempts - correct. For guesses: correct = guesses x guess-success%, wrong = guesses - correct. Add both correct counts and both wrong counts, then apply raw score = 4 x total correct - 1 x total wrong.
What happens if I leave a NEET question unattempted?+
Unattempted questions score exactly 0 - no gain, no penalty. Leaving a question blank is always the safer choice compared to a random guess where you can't eliminate any option and your estimated success is below 20%.
What is the maximum possible NEET score?+
720 marks, from 180 questions x 4 marks per correct answer, achieved only with a perfect paper (all 180 correct, none wrong or unattempted).
Does this calculator predict my actual NEET score exactly?+
No. It computes an expected/statistical score from the accuracy and attempt numbers you enter - useful for exam-day strategy and practice-test planning - but your real result depends on the specific questions you get right or wrong, which this tool cannot know in advance.
How does the NEET UG 2025 exam pattern differ from earlier years?+
From 2025 onward, NTA discontinued the optional Section B that existed from 2021-2024 (which had offered a choice of questions within each subject). The exam reverted to the pre-COVID format: 180 compulsory questions, no optional set, in a single 180-minute session.
Is skipping better than guessing blindly in NEET?+
It depends on your estimated success rate. If you genuinely have no idea and would be guessing at the baseline 25% for a 4-option question, attempting is still marginally better than skipping (25% is just above the 20% break-even). How does accuracy affect my raw score under NEET's +4/-1 marking?+
Raw score for A attempted questions at accuracy p works out to A x (5p - 1) marks. At 100% accuracy that's A x 4 (the maximum); at 20% accuracy it's exactly 0 (break-even); below 20% it turns negative. Small changes in accuracy near the 20% line swing the expected score more than the same change would near 80-90% accuracy.
How many marks does one wrong answer cost compared to getting it right?+
A 5-mark swing. Answering correctly earns +4; answering wrong earns -1 - a gap of 5 marks between the two outcomes on the same question. That's why a handful of careless wrong answers can undo a much larger number of correct ones, and why accuracy matters more than raw attempt count.
Which NEET subject should I prioritize for accuracy - Physics, Chemistry or Biology?+
Biology, by weight. The paper splits 45 Physics, 45 Chemistry and 90 Biology questions - 180 max marks each for Physics and Chemistry but 360 for Biology, exactly half the 720-mark total. The same percentage-point change in accuracy is worth twice as many marks in Biology as in either of the other two subjects.
